University of the Western Cape(Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is involved in the implementation of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. Established in 2012, the Program is a global endeavor intended to nurture the upcoming generation of influential leaders by empowering highly talented, service-oriented young individuals, primarily from Africa, to pursue higher education and develop their leadership potential.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UWC is dedicated to supporting academically talented individuals from South Africa and other parts of the African continent. In the 2025 Academic Year, the Program at UWC will be providing fully-funded opportunities for young Mastercard Foundation Scholars to pursue either undergraduate or master’s degree qualifications.
1. Deadline to apply is 30 August 2024 to study in South Africa at the University of Western Cape for a Masters degree sponsored by MasterCard Foundation.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UWC not only covers tuition fees but also offers various resources to help scholars transition into meaningful work. Scholars receive pre-arrival support, on-campus housing, personalized assistance, a monthly stipend, medical aid, a laptop, study materials allowance, and holistic support programs. They must sign a scholarship agreement and can only receive funding for full-time studies at UWC for a minimum of 2 years. Scholars cannot hold another UWC scholarship concurrently, but external partial bursaries may be complemented by the program. Participation in wrap-around support programs is mandatory for all scholars to enhance personal, academic, and professional development.

2. Eligibility

To be eligible for the Mastercard Foundation Masters Scholarship, applicants must meet specific criteria such as being under 30 years old, meeting the University’s minimum admissions requirements, starting their studies in January 2025, and demonstrating barriers to accessing university education.
