Globally, women represent approximately 25 percent of the workforce in the aerospace industry. Zonta International is dedicated to ensuring that women have equal access to resources and are well-represented in decision-making roles. To support this mission, the organization offers the Amelia Earhart Fellowship, which was established in 1938 in honor of the renowned pilot and Zontian, Amelia Earhart. This fellowship provides US$10,000 annually to up to 30 women who are pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering and space sciences. Recipients can use the fellowship at any university or college that offers accredited post-graduate courses and degrees in these fields. Since its inception, Zonta has awarded 1,734 Amelia Earhart Fellowships, totaling more than US$11.6 million, to 1,305 women from 77 countries.

- Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Requirements
To qualify for the Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship, women from any country who are pursuing a Ph.D./doctoral degree and have a strong academic background in aerospace engineering or space sciences are eligible. It is essential that applicants are enrolled in a full-time Ph.D./doctoral program and have completed at least one year of study, or hold a master’s degree in an aerospace-related field at the time of application. Candidates must not complete their Ph.D. or doctoral program before April 2026.
Please be aware that post-doctoral research programs do not meet the criteria for this Fellowship. Club members, direct Zonta International members, employees of Zonta International and Zonta Foundation for Women, as well as their relatives, are not eligible to apply. Additionally, previous Amelia Earhart Fellows cannot reapply for a second year of funding.

The Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Committee reviews the applications and recommends recipients to the Zonta International Board. All applicants are evaluated on the criteria stated in the requirements section of the application. All details of the evaluations are kept confidential; evaluations are not disclosed to applicants. All applicants will be notified of their status by the end of April.
