From May to October each year, the most qualified candidates engage in a 12-week research internship, guided by faculty members from Canadian universities across diverse academic fields, spanning from science and engineering to the humanities and social sciences.

The Globalink research internship award amount includes: 

  • Funding to contribute to the cost of a round-trip airfare to Canada (amount varies depending on country of origin)
  • Funding to contribute to the cost of transportation from the airport in Canada to accommodation
  • Stipend for housing (amount varies depending on country of origin)
  • Stipend towards student enrollment fees (amount varies depending on host institution)
  • Stipend for food and incidentals (amount varies depending on country of origin)
  • Emergency health insurance policy for the duration of the internship
  • Support from student mentors on campus in Canada
  • Access to industry events and professional development courses

To qualify for the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
  • Be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or combined undergraduate/master’s program at an eligible institution (refer to the list of eligible institutions by country).
  • Have one to three semesters left in their program as of fall 2025 (check specific requirements by country).
  • Fulfill the grade requirements for their country of study (see GPA standards for each international partner).
  • Apply to a minimum of three and a maximum of ten projects, ensuring selections are from at least three different Canadian provinces.
  • Be proficient in the oral and written language of the project (English and/or French).
  • Be available for a 12-week internship that runs consecutively between May 1 and October 31, with the internship start date falling between May 1 and July 31. Any dates outside this range are not permitted.
  • Not have previously received a Globalink Research Internship project.
  • Applicants currently affiliated with or receiving funding or in-kind support from any institutions listed as NROs are ineligible for Mitacs-funded projects that involve research aimed at advancing a Sensitive Technology Research Area (STRA). Mitacs will also review a selection of applications at its discretion to verify the accuracy of the submitted declarations. The organization reserves the right to deny funding for any project related to sensitive technology research areas due to concerning affiliations.

  • Mitacs invites you to begin preparing the following items ahead of the application opening:
  • Examine all eligibility requirements: Beyond the general GRI standards, there may be unique criteria for each country and international partner organization.
  • Ensure that your passport from your home country is valid until at least January 2026. (You can apply even if your passport is not currently valid, but you will need to provide valid passport details if your application is accepted).
  • Secure a reference letter from a professor. Please consult the reference letter guidelines included in the downloadable Globalink Research Internship Information zip file. All reference letters must adhere to the specified instructions.
  • Revise your CV: You may submit your own CV or utilize the CV template found in the downloadable Globalink Research Internship Information zip file.
  • Gather your academic transcripts (in English or French). If your institution cannot provide transcripts in either language, you will need to have them translated and notarized. Transcripts must be part of your application.
  • Language proficiency tests in English or French may be necessary for certain countries. Be sure to check the specific requirements for your country.
  • In your application, you will also need to provide information about:
