Hagos Gebrhiwet won the Oslo Diamond, recording world’s fastest time

Ethiopian Hagos Gebrhiwet triumphed in the 5,000m event at the Diamond League, recording the second fastest time globally this year in Oslo, Norway, last week.

Many of the world’s renowned athletes, including those from Ethiopia, are anticipated to achieve success and victory at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

In line with these expectations, Hagos Gebrhiwet, a top Ethiopian contender for the Paris Games, triumphed in the 5,000 meters at the Diamond League competition in Oslo on Thursday, May 30, 2024. He not only secured first place but also recorded the second-fastest time ever, finishing in 12:36.73, just behind the world record of 12:35.36 set by Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei.

Hagos recorded a time in the distance event that surpassed the times of Ethiopian Olympic champions Kenenisa Bekele, Yomif Kejelcha, and Haile Gebrselassie, who recorded times of 12:37.35, 12:38.95, and 12:39.36, respectively.

In the Oslo Diamond League, Yomif Kejelcha, another Paris Olympic hopeful for Ethiopia, secured second place with a time of 12:38.95. In the men’s 3,000-meter freestyle, Lekna Ambaw finished second with a time of 8:24.29, while Wubreust Aschale placed ninth, finishing in 8:33.65.

On the other hand, preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics, athletes chosen for various distances have begun rigorous training sessions at their designated hotel.

Additionally, the Ethiopian Olympic Committee and the Ethiopian Athletics Federation jointly announced at the Marriott Hotel that, except for the marathon, the final selection of middle- and long-distance runners for both men and women will be revealed next month.
